Craft Beer Industry Fact Sheet
• Craft beer is an approach to brewing. Craft beer is brewed using traditional methods, without adjuncts such as rice or corn, and focuses on what’s distinctive and flavorful.
• This style of beer often refers to the products of microbreweries or craft breweries. Olde Main is considered a brewpub, a type of small microbrewery, because it is a restaurant that brews beer on site.
• Retail sales in the craft beer market grew 16% in 2007 according to the Brewers Association. This is the second year of double digit growth.
• Since 2004, dollar sales by craft brewers have increased 58%. The Brewers Association attributes this to the American trend of buying local products and a preference for more flavorful foods and beers.
• The craft beer market grew 12% by volume in 2007 according the to Brewers Association. There was only a 1.4% growth in volume for the imports and non-craft domestic beer segments.
• There are 1,420 craft breweries in the United States according to the Brewers Association.
• According to the Beer Institute, Iowa is ranked 15th in per capita consumption of malted beverages in the United States.
